[Book Review] - The Raft by S.A. Bodeen

Title: The Raft
   Author: S.A. Bodeen
   Format: Hardcover
   Release Date: August 21st, 2012
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5.0

Robie is an experienced traveler. She’s taken the flight from Honolulu to the Midway Atoll, a group of Pacific islands where her parents live, many times. When she has to get to Midway in a hurry after a visit with her aunt in Hawaii, she gets on the next cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there’s a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. The only passenger, Robie doesn’t panic until the engine suddenly cuts out and Max shouts at her to put on a life jacket. They are over miles of Pacific Ocean. She sees Max struggle with a raft.

And then . . . she’s in the water. Fighting for her life. Max pulls her onto the raft, and that’s when the real terror begins. They have no water. Their only food is a bag of Skittles. There are sharks. There is an island. But there’s no sign of help on the way.

My Review:

The Raft was one of the most unique books and immediately brought me back to the movie Cast Away immediately. Robie was a believable character, that I fell in love with, her personality, her choices, and her decisions were just that realistic and believable. S.A. Bodeen created a drama that will move you, and will blow your mind at the end of the book.

I was looking at this book, over and over and when I got into the book it starts off slow and while this book starts to build. We get a glimpse in the boring life of Robie, and how she wants something far different than what she has. Her parents I only assumed were biologists on the island off the coast of Honolulu which is why she was around Hawaii and with her aunt at the time. What was great about this book, is the intro holds the key to making this book great!

Robie in the beginning of the book, is a normal everyday girl and she for some reason convinces her aunt to leave her alone for a week before heading back to her parents. However, through a turn of events the very next day she gets on the jumper plane and heads back to her secluded island, to see her parents and she's completely distraught. I would love to tell you what happened, but I will let you read the book, but the event humanizes her, makes her believable.

While aboard the plane, she believes everything will be okay, that everything will be fine; however that's not at all the case. When one engine fails, the co-pilot, Max, tells her to put on a life jacket and within moments she's in the water with a raft, a life jacket, and Max. Which is where the book becomes great! Robie is a normal girl, a biologist in starting, but she's stuck in the middle of an ocean and faced with every life decision most of us will never get to see in our lifetime.

Even though this is a smaller book, the story was great and Robie's tale of how she's surviving on the water.  I love how the mental illnesses crop up through the book, and Bodeen does a great job of masking what illness those are throughout the book until the end, and the pieces fit together and the ultimate journey comes together with an eye opener of just how bad she had it out on the water. I loved this book, but it was just too short, I found myself wanting to know more about Robie after the book was over, and wanting to know what happened to her. I guess though, that leaves it open, and says just how good a book this was.
