My Review:
This book was a surprise. I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did, frankly this book is a complete relaxing refreshing romance novel. What seems like a pretty good love-triangle forming, doesn't really pan out and for that I enjoy and applaud the author for making Nikki strong willed to stand up and make a decision. However, the originality in this book could very well be it's downfall, for some people.
Nikki was this girl who made a rather rash decision and traveled to a place below (well below normal real world), and met Cole Stockton who drains her of her energy. He's what's known as an Everneath (the same as the place he comes from), and part of his whole demeanor is just arrogant, and pushing where he wants to go. Nikki however doesn't stand for Cole's antics and rightfully puts him in his place time and time again.
Nikki while confusing to understand and how sometimes her modes swing from one direction to another, I think it mainly stemmed from who she was interacting with. More than anything when reading YA paranormal romances you get the feeling that the love interest is the sole aspect and attention if the protagonist; however, with Everneath, Nikki explores her friends, family, and those close to her. It's not solely on the love interest, and mainly the romance aspect of the story doesn't take main precedence over the rest of the story.
I loved the whole aspect of the Everneath. It reminded me of an alternative to vampires, the Everneaths in their own realm of sorts, seek out humans in which they drain the energy of so they can live longer. I enjoyed that alternative look, however, Nikki is the case in which she wants to tie up loose ends in the human realm rather than join the Everneaths. Yet when she does she is given a time delay till The Tunnels come for her. The Tunnels apparently are a place in which exiled humans or others go to be constantly drained over time to supply and feed the queen/king or the whole world. It's confusing and I didn't quite understand that bit completely.
However the depth of the whole bit is rather good. Also after being drained Nikki isn't sure why she choose that, so half the book is the memories of her path with Jack (her previous boyfriend) and why she chose Cole to drain her and make her an Everneath. Frankly that's the part that I enjoyed along with the bit of rekindling romance with Jack. The romance was great but a lot of the book strayed away from it, and tied the whole package together.
The writing was pretty straight forward, I was trying time and time again to understand the Tunnel bit, but maybe I just thought about it too hard. Ashton does a great job dealing with the potential love-triangle I hate, and where Nikki can make a choice she does. It's not like she doesn't care about both, but she sees what needs to be done, makes a choice and follows through with it. I know that some people may not agree with me that the love-triangle is a bad thing, but I just can't do it, its not fair to the other two. Make a choice, stick with it, inevitably there will be a choice made for you otherwise.
