[Stacking the Shelves] - #8

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your bookshelf, be it the physical one or your digital one!

This week was rather focused on a single series. I found a good source of a sale and picked up the entire Immortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare. So right now the series is current, to where it is, but doing so I stumbled on a tidbit. I didn't know the series was coming out next year as a movie. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, I find that rather interesting, and I will probably put this on the forefront of what I am reading (well I still have a few series I want to finish yet). I want to get to this series and read it before the hype of the movie takes over and jeopardizes my opinion.

Since this week it was the full series, I am going going to talk on the first book. Mainly because I don't feel the need to discuss why I got the series, more of why I decided the series should be read, and what my expectations are out of the series. I figure really explaining that with the first book, should help give ideas and where I am heading with the others. So, I'll just go ahead.

City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
City of Fallen Angels
City of Lost Souls

The Immortal Instruments Series:

   Author: Cassandra Clare
   Format: Hardback
   Release Date: March 27th, 2007

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

City of Bones of course is the first book, and well as of 2013 will be the first movie as well. I want to clarify, this was on my wishlist and watchlist to pick up long before I found out it was to be a movie. So get that out of your head if you think I picked this up because it's going to be a spectacular movie and my expectations for this book were sent to the stars. No, I'm not going to hold this book up to The Hunger Games or The Harry Potter series just because it is going to be a movie. Yes I intentionally left out Twilight, because the Movies just suck.

So anyways, There is a great story here about Clary, and the paranormal. I want there to be paranormal, and from looking at the titles of the books alone, I get the feeling that there will be some at some point. Clary seems like a rather good girl before witnessing some traumatizing murder, but when the body disappears she's left with a lot of questions. I hope that's the case, it would give her some added depth and well make her character someone believable in the beginning, we'll see I guess.

Then Jace, a Shadowhunter, whatever that is. When I first read in this synopsis what Jace was like, "looks like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk," I thought of Daniel from the Fallen series. To me Daniel and Jace go hand in hand in the beginnings of both books (Fallen and City of Bones). I wonder if the two develop in similar ways, it'd be interesting to see how the two differ, and would be a great deal of fun to contrast the two character later on down the road.

Now with the reason for the whole series. Frankly I have heard a lot of great things about Cassandra Clare and she's come across my list of suggested reads a few times, that I can't ignore it much more. It's going to have to come off the shelf and I'm going to have to read it eventually, because people and fans want to know what I think of it. I appreciate it guys, and I hope that more of you suggest books for me to read (ryanlgrooms04@gmail.com). I am looking forward to the book and future suggestions!

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?
