Title: The Lost Hero

     Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for “bad kids.” What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?

     Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.

     Leo has a way with tools. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god.

My Stance:

     I haven't read anything by Rick Riordan and I love most mythology books. So this is the two worlds colliding and frankly I am not sure. I have to be honest, I am not sure if an early teen book is my style anymore. However, I got a great deal on House of Hades so I forsee a marathon starting. I have a question to everyone that has read or started this series though. Do I need to read the either the Kane Chronicles or Percy Jackson and the Olympians series at all? I just don't want to enjoy the series and nab up either the others and realise the stories are now completely ruined, or start the book and be utterly confused with what's going on.

     The book seems solid, we have mystery surrounding Jason and while I am nearly positive it was caused to him, and somehow it has to do with the antagonist in this book. Piper seems the most intriguing to be honest. Are Jason and Piper just normal people and than find out they aren't or just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Further, who is the protagonist, or is this book going to be split between the three perspectives? It would be interesting, but I am not sure if it'd be appropriate for this book. I'll try it either way.

[Book Review] - Possession by Elana Johnson

   My Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0

     Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

     But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them….starting by brainwashed Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous: everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

     This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

My Review:

     While I went into this book expecting a lot more than what I got out of it, I did enjoy it. This was one of those dystopian novels that I thought from the lovely synopsis. The government has taken over pretty much every aspect of life. The two main characters in the beginning, Violet and Zenn have been in love for years. While the government says they aren't supposed to see each other, they manage to sneak . However one night they are caught, simple.

     I wanted this book to be good, and while I enjoyed parts of it. The world building in this book is just not there. World building is key and while there was a lot of scenarios and different settings, it seemed to be rushed into the next one. The world never really seemed to settle, it was a constant journey, and the whole book focused on the characters more so than the world and the environment around. It was just so glaring, I couldn't look past it. I wanted more than anything to know more about the governing body.

     Now to Violet, and the most confusing character above all. I couldn't understand her at all. Yeah I understand that the position she is in is rough, and while she is thought to be a traitor of some sort. She is believed to be a Thinker, people who can control the thoughts and actions (nearly) of those around them. Most of the government is composed of Thinkers, because how else can you govern the masses. However, she doesn't want want that life or can't live with herself is she is moving the people she loves.

     Zenn is her love in the beginning and while there isn't much to him, I found him to take her for granted. "I love you and we're destined to be together." I'm sorry that doesn't work in dystopian fiction anymore. What may have worked in this book is someone who wants to show her why they need to be together, why she is special. I didn't buy his feelings at all, and thought he was more of an annoyance to the story than the effort it probably took to write him into the book.

     Jag is the next character, while isn't in a main character until later in the book. He's the character that I fell in love with this book. He kept me on my toes, and made a genuinely confusing and almost boring book slightly entertaining. The relationship he took with Violet was unique and refreshing to this story. Jag singlehandedly saved this book I feel from being a complete failure. While he was confident and exuded arrogance and charm, he was the breath of life in this book.

     The rest of the book was messy and confusing. To be honest even after having read it, I am not sure what the book was overall trying to get across. The ending has caught a bit of grieve, in how it isn't a happy ending, and it is a bit realistic. I enjoyed how Elana didn't write the story that everyone as expecting to see, and twisted it into a near cliffhanger for the second book. It was probably the best part here, and that's just not great.

     If you are thinking about picking up this book, I have to warn you: This book is for a select few. I wanted this book to be good, and while I enjoyed it, the rating I felt it deserved just wouldn't match. It's disappointing but I can't and won't go higher. It had promise and while the workings are all there, the writing style is great. The book tried to tackle too much and the world building wasn't there. I highly suggest looking into another book, or maybe something else (Slated, Unwind, etc.) to satisfy this taste.

[Movie Review] - Vampire Academy

Review:

     Vampire Academy was a book in which I wasn't expecting to watch and I had nearly no expectation of what I would be getting out of the movie. I haven't read the book, and I very much want to now. I enjoyed the classy, chick humor. I say chick in that this movie is tailored to girls/women, I don't know of any guy would would willingly go and see this without a girlfriend. Before any of you say, "Well you went and saw it." Yea, because out of curiosity and pure boredom. If it was any normal day, and I was going to see any movie EVER, this would not be it. but having said that I was rather surprised by the movie.

     Lucy Fry (as Lissa Drogmir) and Zoey Deutch (as Rose Hathaway) were casted really well. They both played the parts really well. I thought Lissa was this prissy queen/princess from the beginning, and while Rose was supposed to be this warrior/guardian, to be frank I found she was more laughable than an action star. However, if you are watching this movie for the action, I highly suggest you watch another movie. The friendship between the two was meh. While the plot suggested a conflict with the two, I found that it was more of an argument/mis-understand of two rather immature girls that frankly should be in the middle school, not high school.

     My first complaint was the action. If you want to put fighting scenes in the movie, please make them not laughable. No one could act-fight in this movie at all. I watch a lot of action movies, and frankly that's my favorite genre of movie, and when it comes to fighting there's a few movies that strike me as good, this was laughable. For Vampires I expected them to be fast, and it wouldn't have been hard to put a little graphics in there to make it appear that way, or something to play with the eye. It was so slow, wimpy, weak, that I am sure the humans could have fought back and had a better chance at winning.

     Next up is Rose's choice in a love interest. I want to talk about age, I know that age is a legal discriminator (when you drink, drive, vote, etc.), but I would make the argument that if you are going to date at say age 18-20 you should be dating someone near your age group (+/- 7/8 years). I am pretty sure that Dimitri is 15+ years over Rose, and frankly dating a potential father is rather disgusting. Okay maybe they weren't dating but the progress there shows in the movie. Maybe the book discerns the age differently and it's more acceptable there, but the actors seemed so far apart in maturity that it just didn't seem natural, let alone right at all.

     Maybe I am being harsh on this movie and maybe my standards are a little higher than what I should have had. I did just watch The Fault in Our Stars and here shortly later If I Stay, so my expectations are soaring at the moment. However, I don't want to lower my standards just for a movie or two. I want movies to earn their rating, and this just wasn't where I though it could be. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie enough that I'm trying to find a good copy of the Vampire Academy series. I loved the potential of the movie, I don't don't like the direction it took. Maybe the book was different from movie, I want to find the book and find out.

Note: I haven't read the book, so this is my perspective having just seen the movie.

My Stance:

     The second book in the Earthbound series by Aprilynne Pike. I haven't read Earthbound, but I am a completionist, must have it all. I have heard rather mixed reviews on Earthbound, but I am hopeful. I want the series to be good, and more, but I have to read it for that to happen. While I am at it, I haven't read anything by Pike as of yet, which does make me a bit sad, but there is so many books on my TBR pile that I am not sure when I'll get around to one. I want to, just between my TBR pile and work, there's just not that much time.

     Tavia seems like a complicated girl, that or the decisions put in front of her and what she needs to act on is difficult. It is interesting to see a love triangle star in this book, but that again I don't know that one wasn't in the first now do I? :P It just seems weird, to possibly start one now, and not have it continue. However if you can recreate earth, and there are those who want to destroy it and start over, to what end? I mean if you destroy earth you won't be alive to see your fruition at all. I don't see the point in the motive.

     Maybe I am looking too much into this. I am not sure what I expect really out of the first book, but either way I am sure I will enjoy it. I need to get around to reading it, or I could do a Pike August Poll :P

[Book Review] - Right of Way by Lauren Barnholdt

     Unless it isn’t. Because when you’re in love, you don’t just stop calling one day. And you don’t keep secrets. Or lie. And when your life starts falling apart, you’re supposed to have the other person to lean on.

     Here are Peyton and Jace again, broken up but thrown together on a road trip. One of them is lying about the destination. One of them is pretending not to be leaving something behind. And neither of them is prepared for what’s coming on the road ahead…

My Review:

     Right of Way was my first book by Lauren Barnholdt, and frankly while I didn't start with Two-Way Street, I fell in love with this book. Admittedly I expected it to be more of a summery, beach-style, road trip of a book. While I was a bit disappointed in some of the conflicts and just how the conflicts unfolded. However the awkwardness between Peyton and Jace was great, and while at times it created a rift, I thought it was kind of chivalrous and kindhearted the way Jace seemed to look after Peyton.

     The book starts in the middle of a wedding with Peyton trying to get a ride from a friend of hers, who just happens to bail on her. They had planned to escape and go to a beach and relax, however Peyton wants to move out and be on her own in that city. At the same time though, Jace a previous friend who broke her heart, shows up to save the day and gives her a ride. However Peyton isn't completely honest when she gives the directions.

     The book alternates back and forth between the present and why there is so much tension between the two. However the deeper the book dives into Peyton she turns out to be this self-absorbed brat that frankly was the only flaw I saw in the book. What got me past her, was I viewed her as an immature girl who is trying to make a life for herself. However most of the time I didn't think her choices were realistic at all.

     Jace on the other hand is a complete gentleman, however at times he is a bit of a douche. I am not sure if I enjoyed him because frankly when he had enough of Peyton's crap he ups and leaves like she asks, nearly. His character was refreshing and I found more realistic. Most of his actions were frankly what I would do, minus leaving her I would be pissed and tell her to get in the car or call someone to pick her up.

     Half of the book was spent on trying to figure out why the two of them broke each other's hearts before the start of the book. While the expectation for that revelation to be dramatic and worthwhile, it fell short kind of. I viewed it more of a miscommunication, and if you loved each other that much and just stopped talking, why don't you just pick up the phone and try. The effort put forth by the two is underwhelming when it came to that event, and is rather silly.

     The reason I rated this a 4.0 and didn't take off more for the Peyton and underwhelming backstory revelation, was I was able to look past the two. As well, the writing style of Barnholdt was effortless and brilliant, and that made up for some of the hardships I found in the book. However the part that stuck with me most of all, was how sweet the book was in the end. It just ended so profound and well, that I honestly can't wait to start Two-Way Street.

[Stacking the Shelves] - #64

     Well I hope you all had a great Happy Fourth of July. I spent it with my family watching a few fireworks. Further I want to thank everyone for the support I have gotten the last week. My visitors are up, compared to previous weeks/months, I appreciate the support and hope to continue more. I went through some of my goodreads TBR pile and cleaned up a lot of duplicates, I urge you all to follow that To Read list, I haven't had time to update the one I have on my blog at the moment, I will get around to it though. That's mostly what I plan on doing this week, editing a lot of my side pages to update and keep them current (if you want to stay active and follow me, Goodreads and Pinterest are better ways to stay on top, but that's up to you). I hope to do a Featured discussion this week, I have a few topics in mind, but I am still looking for more ideas and whatnot. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

     On a side note I didn't get anything drastically new this week, as in anything released in the last month or two. I did get another shipment from BookOutlet with a few new books, I will post the newest ones I got from them. As well I intend to try to take BookHaul photos and post those to twitter. I am not sure if I am going to make that a new feature, or replace Stacking the Shelves with that. It's something I am going to have to debate and think about.
